Required Waiver
Before participants may attend any activity, the General Waiver MUST BE returned to UWP.


GRIOT WORKS™
Trains youth and adult volunteers to become storytellers through on-going workshops, as part of a classroom elective or an after-school program. Students gain public speaking and performance skills, as well as increasing their reading capabilities through international folklore, mythology and fables. Trained troupes of students perform their community service by storytelling for younger audiences in hospitals, family shelters, public libraries and after-school programs.

BoUnce is Griot Works™ program of Urban Wilderness Project

What:
OPEN MIC EVENTS with a Cash prize. Winning team receives a cash prize of 50% of the door money. Other prizes may be awarded.

When:
FIRST FRIDAYS EACH MONTH BoUnce: The Sport of Storytelling™ kicks off its second season on April 4, 2008 at 8PM

Where:
Miller Community Center Annex Basketall Courts, 330 19th Avenue E., Seattle

How:
SIGN-UPS START AT 8 PM, GAME TIME 8:20 PM
Suggested Donation: $1-5

BoUnce is a cooperative competition between all-ages storytelling sports teams. Individuals are invited to perform and then randomly placed with 2- 4 other individuals to form 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 teams.

The competition alternates between basketball and storytelling skills. There are 4 periods and in each period there are two rounds. The first round of each period is B. Ball and the 2nd Storytelling. Points are awarded for each round to determine who leads in each period. Basketball skills- dribbling, shooting, passing, scoring and the slam dunk. Storytelling skills- improv, passing the story, content, finish and delivery.

Sign-Up
Sign-up at the door. Please bring a completed waiver signed by your parent or guardian if your are under 18 years old. Suggested subjects: Courage, So Scared, Lost, Unbelievable Days, How and Why Stories, Tall Tales, Love, Betrayal? ALL STORIES, POEMS, LYRICS, RHYMES AND CONTENT MUST BE suitable for all-ages. No racist, sexist, homophobic performances.

·   A spoken word, storytelling performance and writing workshop. Learn to bring your poems, stories, lectures or speeches to life through improvisation, movement, and voice control.

Times
·   Tuesdays from 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm

Dates
·   April 22, 29 and May 6 and 13, 2008

Service-Learning Benefit
·   This workshop is offered free to the public with the hope and intention that you will use your new skills to restore and encourage positive communities by volunteering for 4-6 hours to bring stories to children who are in hospitals, transitional living situations or homeless family shelters. You are an important part of Urban Wilderness Project's Griot program. Volunteer--Be Part of the Solution.
